Heat treatment / mechanical properties of Z21CDV12

Optimal mechanical properties may beattained by quenching and tempering, in which the steel is first hardened byholding the steel at a temperature between 1020 and 1070°C followed by quenchingin air, oil or polymer. The tempering temperature is dependent on the desired strength. In most cases a tempering treatmentin the temperature range 640 to 740°C followed by air cooling produces therequired properties. In this condition, the following mechanical proper- tiescan be expected:

NOTE: In order to reduce the possibility ofcracking, the component must be tempered as soon as possible after the hardeningtreatment. Stress relieving treatments are usually performed within thetemperature range 600 to 680°C.

Welding

Z21CDV12, may only be welded once specialprecautions have been taken. For example, the work piece must be preheated toa temperature between 400 and 450°C, depending on the geometry of the component. During welding, aninterpass temperature of between 400 and 500°Cmust be maintained. Afterwelding, the component can be immediately annealed or tempered.If a tempering treatment is performed, thenthe weldment must be slowly cooled to a temperature between 100 and 150°C.After complete transformation to martensite, the component must be tempered ata temperature between 740 and 780°C for a period of at least 4 hours.Tempering is to be followed by slow cooling.
